What is Akadama?
Akadama is a volcanic red clay soil from Japan. Thanks to its porous, granular structure, this soil combines excellent water absorption with good drainage. This ensures a stable moisture balance and reduces the risk of root rot.
- Excellent aeration – promotes healthy root growth
- Good water absorption and drainage – optimal moisture balance
- Nutrient buffering capacity – temporarily retains nutrients
- Structurally stable – remains intact, even after wintering
- Neutral soil type – suitable for almost all tree species
Akadama is often used in combination with Kiryu, Keiseiki (bims), or Vulkastrat. The mixing ratios below are a guideline and can be adjusted based on your plant's specific needs:
- Conifers: 50% Akadama + 50% Kiryu, Keiseiki or Vulkastrat
- Deciduous trees: 70% Akadama + 30% Kiryu, Keiseiki or Vulkastrat
Akadama contains no nutrients or trace elements. Fertilization is therefore necessary during the growing season.
