How do you choose a Bonsai pot?
A bonsai is only complete when the tree and pot are in harmony. Choosing the right bonsai pot requires some knowledge of proportions, style, and function. It all starts with choosing a glazed or unglazed pot.
Our webshop also offers a wide selection, which is great, but you might also find it helpful to have a few tips on choosing the right bonsai container. Below is a selection from our range, but read on to learn how to choose the right size, shape, and color!

Basic requirements for a Bonsai pot
First of all: The bonsai pot must have drainage holes to prevent root rot. Never place a bonsai in a closed pot, as trees (unlike houseplants) often cannot tolerate constantly wet feet. Wire holes are also necessary to securely fasten the tree to the bonsai pot.
Hard-fired ceramic is the most common—it doesn't absorb water and often has a rough interior that encourages root growth. Plastic and terracotta pots are suitable as training pots during development.
Determining proportions
Start by measuring. The depth of the pot should generally be equal to the diameter of the trunk directly above the nebari (the root base). This is especially true for upright styles such as Chokkan, Moyogi, and Hokidachi. This rule doesn't apply to developing trees, of course; for vigorous development, a deeper pot is recommended.
The length of a rectangular or oval bonsai pot is, again, generally about two-thirds of the tree's height. For round and square pots, use one-third of the height as the diameter.
A few exceptions: trees with a wide crown require a taller pot (two-thirds of the foliage width). Trident maples, fruiting trees, and flowering trees require deeper bonsai pots for their root systems. Cascade styles require tall pots so that the drooping branches don't touch the table.
Choosing a bonsai pot
Matching the character of your tree
First, determine the character of your tree. This is the most important step.
So-called "masculine" characteristics: rough bark, dead wood, thick trunk, strong branches. If so, choose deep pots with angular lines, sturdy legs, and a protruding rim. Rectangular and square shapes work best.
And "feminine" characteristics: smooth bark, graceful curves, and fine branching. Use pots with soft lines, oval or round shapes, low proportions, and subtle legs. A tucked-in rim enhances this effect.
Most trees combine both characteristics. Consider which one is dominant and choose your pot accordingly. The most important thing is that you're happy with it, of course!
Choosing the right color for a Bonsai pot
The pot color should be reflected in the tree's bark, leaves, flowers, or fruit. When choosing a color, it's also highly recommended to search online for images of your tree species and see which pot colors you like.
Unglazed bonsai pots in brown, gray, or earth tones are safe and almost always suitable. These are the standard choice for conifers, pines, and junipers.
Glazed bonsai pots are primarily used with deciduous trees. They can accentuate seasonal colors. A dark pot makes red autumn leaves stand out more. Older trees complement subdued, darker hues. Blue and green can serve as contrasting colors, but be careful not to let the pot dominate. It's a shame if you only focus on the pot instead of the tree and the whole.

Shape and details
Rectangular pots add more power and impact. Oval and round pots have a softer feel. Drum pots are neutral and suit many styles. Pay attention to the legs. Large, pronounced legs enhance masculinity. Small, discreet legs suit a feminine character.
Keep decorations minimal. A subtle texture can be interesting, but the tree should remain the focal point. Only exceptionally striking trees typically require truly striking bonsai vessels.
Handmade or machine produced
Handmade pots from Japanese or Chinese potters are unique works of art with subtle irregularities in shape, glaze, and finish—each piece is different. They are more expensive but contribute to the value and aesthetics of high-quality bonsai.
Machine-made pots are more affordable, more consistent in quality, and ideal for developing trees or when budget is a priority. These more affordable, machine-made pots in our shop are of good quality, but don't compare to the quality and appearance of handmade bonsai pots.
Placement in the pot
Place the tree slightly off-center—about a third from the side—in rectangular and oval bonsai pots. Set it back slightly, depending on the direction of the foliage. This creates depth. Practical tips for choosing a Bonsai pot
When looking for a pot, take the following measurements so you can immediately find one that fits your tree well (literally): tree height, trunk diameter above the nebari, and crown width.
In our webshop, we list each pot by size, shape, and color, allowing you to easily filter your selection. Start with the size, then find a shape and color that aesthetically complements your tree.
Another tip: Visit exhibitions and see how others display their trees. Pay attention to the proportions and color choices of similar tree species.
There are usually several pots that suit your tree. The ultimate choice is personal—choose what makes you happy and where the tree and pot together create a balanced whole. Hopefully, this article has helped you choose the right bonsai pot for your tree!
