In summer, the Zelkova can be placed outdoors for optimal growth. This significantly boosts its health. Place it in a sheltered spot with morning sun and afternoon shade.

Winter care: The tree can also be kept outdoors during the winter, and it will lose most of its leaves. It should be outside from late summer onwards so it can prepare for the low temperatures. However, most beginners keep the tree indoors during the winter; it continues to grow actively and needs plenty of light.

Watering - regular and consistent

The Zelkova, also known as Ulmus parviflora, needs regular watering. Check daily and water as soon as the topsoil becomes slightly dry. The soil should remain slightly moist but not soaking wet.

Practical tip for indoor bonsai: Place your Zelkova in the sink and water it generously until it drains well. Let it drain briefly before putting it back. Preferably use lukewarm water. A plastic saucer filled with fine gravel or grit increases the humidity – this is beneficial for the Zelkova.
