Care tips for the Privet Bonsai
Placing your Ligustrum bonsai
The privet is flexible in placement. Place your tree in a bright spot, preferably full sun. Ideally, place it outdoors in the summer for optimal growth.
Winter: Privets can overwinter both indoors and outdoors. Indoors, place them directly in a sunny window at room temperature. Outdoors, they are winter-hardy down to -10°C. In case of severe frost, protect them in an unheated shed. The Chinese Privet (Ligustrum sinensis) is usually kept indoors year-round in bright light. Do not suddenly move an indoor tree outdoors in winter; only trees that have been outdoors since autumn can withstand frost.
Watering - generous in summer
Privets need plenty of water on hot days. Water generously as soon as the soil becomes dry. In winter, water less, but never let the root ball dry out completely.
Practical tip: Check daily in summer – privet grows quickly and requires a lot of water. Also provide plenty of water in winter, for example, if kept indoors, by briefly watering the plant in the sink until it drains well. Then place the tree back in the window.
Fertilization for optimal growth
Privet grows quickly and needs plenty of nutrients. Fertilize every four weeks with organic granules or weekly with liquid fertilizer during the growing season.
Important: If the privet isn't fed enough, it will develop yellowish leaves. With proper fertilization, the leaves will be a beautiful dark green.
Repotting for a healthy root structure
Repot young privets every two years in spring, older specimens every three years. Privets tolerate root pruning well. Use standard bonsai soil—privet isn't picky.
Pruning and shaping
Privet tolerates pruning exceptionally well. Because of its rapid growth, you can prune it back two to three times a year. The more you prune, the finer the branching and the smaller the leaves will remain.
