Placing your Carmona bonsai

The Carmona is a tropical indoor tree that absolutely cannot tolerate frost. Place your tree directly in a sunny window, preferably facing south or west. The more light the better – too little light is one of the biggest problems with this species.

Keep the temperature steady at 18-22°C. During the summer months, the Carmona can be moved outdoors as soon as the nights stay above 15°C. This significantly stimulates growth. Bring it indoors early in the fall when the weather gets colder.

Important tip: Avoid temperature changes and drafts – the Carmona is sensitive to these.

Irrigation - crucial attention needed

Observational watering is essential. Check the soil daily by feeling it about an inch deep with your finger. The soil should remain slightly moist, but not constantly soaking wet. At the same time, the Carmona should not be allowed to dry out.

Practical tip: Place your Carmona in the sink and water it generously until it runs out of the drainage holes. Let the tree drain briefly before putting it back. A plastic saucer filled with fine gravel or grit under the pot increases humidity—beneficial for this tropical species.

Fertilization for optimal growth

Fertilize your Carmona bonsai every four weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) and slightly less often in winter. For indoor use, liquid bonsai fertilizer is most effective. During the flowering period, you can halve the amount of fertilizer to prolong the blooms.

Repotting for a healthy root structure

Repot your tree every three years in early spring. The Carmona has a sensitive root system, so be careful with root pruning. Use a well-draining, slightly acidic soil mixture. A mix of Akadama with some humus and pumice (bims) works well.

Pruning and shaping

The Carmona tolerates pruning well. Cut back to two leaves once 4-6 new leaves have grown. This promotes fine branching. Be careful when pruning thick branches. Always treat larger pruning wounds with wound paste to prevent fungal infections, as the Carmona is susceptible to these.
