Care tips for the Ficus Bonsai
Placing your Ficus bonsai
A Ficus needs plenty of sun to thrive. Place your tree directly in a sunny window, preferably facing south or west. The more sun, the better—the Ficus can even handle full sun. Avoid shady spots, as too little light leads to leaf drop.
The Ficus loves warmth and thrives at a normal room temperature. In summer, it can be placed outdoors as soon as nights stay above 15°C, gradually increasing the amount of sunlight. Bring it indoors in time when it cools down in early autumn.
Irrigation - crucial for survival
Observational watering is essential. Check the soil daily by feeling it about an inch deep with your finger. As soon as the topsoil becomes slightly dry, it's time to water. When you water, be sure to do so thoroughly, ensuring the entire root ball is reached. Never allow the root ball to dry completely.
Practical tip: Place your Ficus in the sink and water it generously until it runs out of the drainage holes. Let the tree drain briefly before putting it back. Preferably use lukewarm water. A plastic saucer filled with fine gravel or grit under the pot increases the humidity around the tree – ideal for healthy leaves.
Fertilization for optimal growth
Fertilize your Ficus bonsai monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) and slightly less often in winter. For indoor use, liquid bonsai fertilizer is most practical—simply mix it with your water.
Repotting for a healthy root structure
Repot your tree every two to three years in the spring. Use a good bonsai potting soil with sufficient structure for drainage. The Ficus tolerates root pruning well, so don't hesitate to prune back old or overgrown roots. This encourages new, thriving root growth and keeps your tree healthy.
Pruning and shaping
Regular pruning keeps your Ficus compact and shapely. Cut back to two leaves once 6-8 new leaves have grown. Treat larger pruning wounds with wound paste to prevent infection and accelerate healing.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I water my Ficus bonsai?
Check the soil daily. Water as soon as the topsoil feels dry—this can be daily in summer, and every few days in winter. Never allow the tree to dry out completely.
Can my Ficus bonsai be kept outside?
Yes, even highly recommended! From May to September (as soon as nights stay above 15°C), your Ficus can go outside. This will significantly promote growth. Place it in a sunny spot.
My Ficus is losing leaves, what now?
Leaf drop is often caused by insufficient light or irregular watering. Move it to a sunnier spot and monitor your watering schedule. Sudden temperature changes or cold drafts can also cause leaf drop.
Which Ficus species is best for beginners?
The Ficus Retusa is excellent for beginners. They are resilient, forgiving of minor care mistakes, and thrive in Dutch living rooms.
What is the Ficus ginseng?
The Ficus ginseng is a popular beginner bonsai often seen in garden centers, with a thick, tuberous trunk. However, we deliberately do not sell this type – the swollen rootstock has a forced, unnatural appearance that doesn't do justice to the authentic bonsai aesthetic. Instead, we recommend the Ficus retusa.
How can I remember what to do and when?
You can download our Bonsai Care App, which is available for free in the app stores. It features smart reminders and allows you to keep track of photos of your tree.
How big does a Ficus bonsai grow?
You determine that yourself through pruning! A Ficus bonsai will maintain its desired compact size with regular pruning. The branching will also become finer, and the leaves will become smaller as a result.
