Bougainvillea is native to the tropics and subtropics of South America. Introduced to Europe in the first half of the 19th century, it is now common in the Mediterranean region. It is a shrubby plant with thorny branches. The flowers are small but surrounded by strikingly colored (often purple) papery bracts that remain on the plant for a long time.
